Inquiry Project Concussions in Sports

The argument I intend to show is simply the problem of concussions in sports and how to fix the problem. I am focusing more on Football because it is a violent sports and concussions are very common in the game play. My arguments for how to fix this look at the protection of the head, neck and upper body. A few things I have come across as possible fixes are newer more developed helmets as well as newer mouthpieces. With new technology that have been put in helmets during college football games scientists are able to look at the parts of the head that take the most punishment and what parts of the helmet offer the best protection. With these results new helmets are being developed to better protect the more vulnerable parts of the brain. Also, mouthpieces are being developed that help spread the force of the impact to the rest of the face and head to avoid concentrated blows to the neck and head. Going back to the NFL there is some shady business going on. The league are granting money to past players with severe brain damage and disease, but all the while keeping the research they have about the effects of concussions away from the current players. A lot of the players look at this is a bad thing, and I plan to use those players as examples in my paper.

  1. I thought you were extremely well informed on your subject. You successfully narrowed down your topic to a specific field of sports medicine (which is very hard). Not very many people have been able to find a specific topic for their project or find a solution for the problem they have addressed, and you have done both -which is impressive.
