Hispanic stories

When watching this video gave me a new perspective on people who move here from other countries. We always hear how hard it is to fit in when you are somewhere new, and most experience this at least once in their lifetime, but I don't think we truly understand what its like. The students in the video explained how different the culture here is compared to that of Mexico. For example in Mexico it is common to greet one another with a kiss, even men, and here if someone tried to do to most Americans, they'd probably get punched. I don't understand why, as Americans we act this way things such as this. I understand it is part of our culture, the way society works, social norms, but i don't understand what is wrong with this? Also the fact that Americans are workaholics, were so focused on work we don't have time for our families. I think a big reason for this is because we love money, and that's not to say people from other countries don't, but clearly they have their priorities set differently and that's where family comes in.

  1. I definitely agree with you on how American's don't really understand the fitting-in thing and how we aren't very accepting of other cultures because it isn't ours. I can't imagine how difficult it could have been for an immigrant to move here and go to school and try to make new friends and just don't feel welcome. I can't imagine it because something like that has never happened to me. Mexican culture as said in the video is very involved with family and spending a lot of time together but American's are not exactly like that. I also agree with you in saying that different countries/cultures have different priorities. I believe that everyone needs to be accepting regardless of who you are or where you come from.
