Literacy Crisis I Dont Think So
While reading Why Johnny can never, ever read I really like what Bronwyn Williams was saying about How there seems to be a literacy crisis in every generation and the society blames it on stupid things like movies or video games. People think that writing is just a set of concrete rules that must never be changed when literacy is involved, for fear of children becoming stupid. But when each generation's children grow up and become adults they have gained the knowledge to write and read and are then become people running this country. So what if a child messages people around the world. I think instant messaging is a legitimate literacy practice and should be taught how to be used. I'm not saying to abandon the paper and pencil but we should embrace the new ways of learning and not fear that something is going to dumb down literacy itself, but to allow literacy to evolve with that generation and the next generation after that. In a never ending cycle of learning.
